Reasons for writing

005When I’ve been out and about book signing, at book fairs etc. I’ve been asked about my reasons for writing. I guess this differs from author to author, but for those of you who might be interested I’ve included my “Mission Statement” below:

The open book is a path to Reading, and Reading is the open door to a World of Wonderment where anything is possible. In some small way I hope to guide every emergent reader towards the path.

The Sheriff of Ballyhaunis

you-know-who-by-june-duffy-stories-with-juneHad a surreal moment in Ryan’s Supervalue, Ballyhaunis yesterday. Was shopping and came across a sheriff: hat, gun, leggings and big star. After saying “Howdy there” I found out that his name was Shane and he’d got his uniform after being in hospital. What a boy!! Didn’t have my camera with me but figured he deserved a copy of my second book “You Know Who” for his bravery. Ballyhaunis sure feels safer now that we have Shane the Sheriff.

“You Know Who” is about a young boy called Sean who lives with his family in a small village in the West of Ireland. One summer afternoon, as he comes in from play, his Dad asks him a question. It is whilst Sean is giving his answer that the most amazing story emerges and it involves keeping a secret.

Full colour illustrated childrens book, 200mm square, thread sewn binding, soft cover.

Kenny / Naughton Autumn School Literary Festival

Lecture given by June Duffy at the Kenny/Naughton Autumn School
October 27th 2012

Firstly, I would like to welcome everyone here and say thank you to Paul Rogers for inviting me to be a guest speaker at this prestigious event. It really is an honour to be here tonight…and so unexpected. I came along this afternoon and listened as the children read out their short stories and poems. They were the winners of this year’s short story/poem competition, and it was a real privilege to share in the celebration of their creative achievement. It wasn’t just the warmth of the log fire that I felt as I stood in the room, but also the family pride…and rightly so. Creative achievement is at the heart of this festival.
